“‘For The Community, This Has Become A Serious Health Crisis’: Val Verde Residents Speak Out Against Chiquita Canyon Landfill”

“Not only are officials invested in the issues Chiquita Canyon Landfill has been causing, but Val Verde resident and lawyer Oshea Orchid has joined forces with Victor O’Connell, who is partnered with Stris and Maher LLP, to put pressure on the landfill and the county to shut Chiquita down for good.

“South Coast Air Quality Management District has now identified that there are elevated levels of benzene, which is a probable carcinogen and a highly toxic gas,” said O’Connell. “We now know that the landfill is taking leachate out of the ground and trying to get rid of it by sending it to other facilities for processing. It sent a 4,600-gallon tanker of waste to dispose of the  leachate but was rejected because they marked it as non-toxic material when, in fact, it has elevated levels of benzene.””
