CCL ANNOUNCES CLOSURE
On December 31, 2024, Chiquita Canyon Landfill announced it will stop operations. The closure of the landfill is an important moment in a campaign that has been going on for several years, as more and more local citizens have been suffering from a variety of illnesses, including respiratory issues, skin irritation, heart conditions, and cancer. However, for citizens to benefit from the many “immediate” services, the community is again calling on the Board of Supervisors to declare a State of Emergency. “While this is a victory for our efforts, we are also deeply concerned that this action will allow the owner and operator of the landfill to not feel the needed urgency to resolve the horrific health and safety issues that the landfill’s presence has created,” said Oshea Orchid, resident, local leader, and managing partner at Sethi Orchid Miner, LLP. “The community has been asking for over a year for the Board of Supervisors to allow for immediate relief that would come from a declaration of a state of emergency.
